Surgical Technologists (ST) are allied health professionals who assistin the preparation and care of surgical patients ranging from infancy togeriatrics under the general direction of a prof essional nurse. The STpossesses expertise in the theory and application ofsterile aseptictechnique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgicalprocedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilit ate asurgeon's performanceof invasive therapeutic anddiagnostic proced ures.The ST who has a dual function in the operating room and the ambula torysetting demonstrates competency in the care of surgical patientspreo peratively and postoperatively in the ambulatory surgical clinicsetting.
Level INew graduate with up to 18 mon ths of full-time equivalent experience.Perform all responsibilities in a manner that demonstrates ServiceExcellence towards patients, physicians ,peers and other departments.Assume responsibility for upholding the pol icies and procedures of thedepartment and organization.Demonstrates eage rness to learn, takes direction, adapts to changeswithin unit, demonstra tes consistent progress toward Level II.Establishes and maintains steril efield and assures team maintainssterile environment. Demonstrate and pr actice a good understanding ofsterile technique.Hasa basic knowledge of instrumentations. Prepare Operating Room withappropriate instrumentation , equipment and supplies.Demonstrates correct and safe instrumentationpa ssing and performssponge, needle and instrument counts in a safe and acc urate manner.Maintain technical skills to serve a patient population com prised ofinfancy to geriatric clients.Take calls and rotate shifts asreq uired under the direction of aregistered nurse.For Surgical Technologist s with a dual role in an ambulatoryenvironment, additional responsibilit ies may include: prepare patientsfor examinations and procedures in the surgical clinic setting; assistthe physician during patient examination and procedures in the clinic;collect and label laboratory specimens for processing; reinforcepostoperative instructions under direction of physi cian or RN; assistwith incoming and outgoing patient calls under supervi sion of physicianorRN; remove sutures/ staples, change sterile and non-s teriledressings, following DUHS policies and procedures, under direction of RNor physician; perform other clinical functions as delegated andsup ervised by the RN or physician; schedule and post surgical cases;coordin ate complex scheduling of cases which require additional surgicalsupport ; update and file patient medical records.Must advance to level II withi n 18 months.Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.Level IIPerform all the duties and responsibilities of Level I, plus thefollow ing:Assist with the teaching of newly hired technologists and studenttec hnologists.Serve as a role model to new employees and other staff member s.Establish and maintain sterile field and assure team maintains sterile environment independently.Anticipate the needs of the surgical team.Appl y basic knowledge of instrumentations to several cases.Demonstrateapprop riate and correct case preparation.Competent at unit level.Corrects defi ciencies at the case level.Communicate effectively with patients,staff m embers and physicians.Adherence to standards including but not limited t o unit and hospitalpolicies and procedures, regulatory standards,and pat ient safety goals.Assume responsibility for self and ensures that the po licies, proceduresand safety practices of the Operating Room andHospital are reinforced.Perform other duties and responsibilities as required. p>

Ability to adapt to ch anges within unit.Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pres sure in astressful environment, and often without relief.Ability to demo nstrate knowledge of anatomy relating to the surgicalprocedureand the in strumentation requiredin order to effectivelyanticipate the needs of the surgeon.Ability to set priorities and respond appropriatelyto actual an d/orpotential life threatening situations.
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program or the successful completion of the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) certification exam.
Level I- Entry level position for new graduates of Surgical Technology programor Surgical Technologists with 0 to 18 months experience. Level II- Requires 6 to 12 months of full-ime equivalent Surgical Technology or relevant military experience.
